‘The Long Winter (Aries Rising)’

Inspired by the symbiotic nature of map lichen. For this piece I was also thinking about our current moment in history. Symbiosis doesn’t just concern lichen, or nature, or climate change. But also how we rely upon each other in community to love the earth better. To love and protect each other better.  

I was also thinking about how map lichen goes into a state of suspended animation to survive the winter. They literally dehydrated themselves to prevent cellular damage from ice crystals, and producing "antifreeze" proteins. They can photosynthesize even when frozen at temperatures as low as to -20 C by absorbing moisture from snow or air. Aries season marks the welcoming of spring and warmer temperatures, close to the time that map lichen "wakes up" in colder parts of the world.
