Limited edition fine art print of my ‘Coorong Lagoon & Murray River Estuary’ painting from my collection, "Maps of the Earth We Still Have"

Part of the Murray-Darling river mouth ecosystem, the Coorong supports many bird and aquatic species and forms a natural estuarine habitat. It is critically endangered due to drastic reductions in water flow, salinity changes, and dredging required to manage the altered river mouth and coastline.  

For this painting I focused in on the estuary and its deep cultural significance for the Ngarrindjeri people. For their culture, Red ochre symbolizes blood, representing the powerful bonds of family, community, and ancestral connections, linking past, present, and future. The rivers and lagoons are the "lifeblood" of Ngarrindjeri Country, providing food, medicine, and spiritual nourishment, making red a color of life itself. Red also connects to the land (Country), the sacred sites, and the Dreamtime stories, such as the creation of the Murray River by Pondi the cod, tying people to their ancestral lands and waters. These waters are seen as a vast "supermarket," sustaining communities for millennia, with red reflecting this deep, life-sustaining connection.
