Limited edition fine art print of my ‘Acacia Forests in the Senegal River Basin’ painting from my collection, "Maps of the Earth We Still Have"
Acacia forests in the Senegal River Basin are a critically endangered due to land-use changes (conversion to agriculture), altered river flow regimes due to dams, drought, and the spread of invasive Prosopis acacia species. All of this has led to significant biodiversity loss, habitat degradation, soil erosion, and threats to local livelihoods. These changes disrupt the vital flood pulse which impacts fisheries, vegetation, and water availability, pushing mass exodus of locals from the area.
For this painting, I was inspired by aerial photographs of the region, and the resin that the locals harvest from the acacia trees. Locally, they call the resin "tears of gold". This resin (gum arabic) provides economic stability for many indigenous groups in the area. It is a major source of income, supporting millions through collection and sale, and is used globally in food, medicine, and crafts. Severe droughts stress acacia trees and reduce gum yields, directly impacting livelihoods.
