‘Planetesimal’
Originally created as a deconstructed color study based on my map lichen paintings, this one reminded me of the rocks and dust particles that we see in the rings of Saturn.
Planetesimals are km-sized solid building blocks formed from cosmic dust and gas in early solar disks, crucial for creating planets through gravitational accretion. They have a mutualistic interaction with the protoplanetary gas disk and other particles, which helps them stick together and grow into planets over millions of years. Planetesimals interact with the gas disk, often relying on it to lose orbital energy, which helps them merge and grow.
This year I’m making are related to symbiosis and thriving / surviving under challenging circumstances. This piece is more about building something together, but I think that fits!
