Naca'n is a new limited edition artist book by contemporary Puerto Rican artist Rokita, produced as part of her Signs of Life collection. The work is constructed of 10 individual watercolor and ink paintings on handmade paper, bound with gold thread. In it, Rokita uses an indigenous Taino word, "naca'n", which means "center", to frame the book. In each composition, Rokita plays with the concept of "center" and seeks to bring Puerto Rican and indigenous Taino culture to the forefront of the minds of those engaged with the work. This work contains themes of the decolonization of Puerto Rico and our connection to land, and giving back indigenous Puerto Rican power.
The Signs of Life collection currently featured at the Ferleman & Company Art Gallery in Cumberland, Maryland.
