Limited edition fine art print of my ‘Murray-Darling Basin Wetlands’ painting from my collection, "Maps of the Earth We Still Have"

This basin supports vast wetlands, agriculture, and several major cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide). This ecosystem supports hundreds of species and contains over 30,000 wetlands and over 20 major rivers that eventually flow into the ocean or end in marshes/wetlands. The basin encompasses around a seventh of Australia’s landmass and is the most important agricultural region on the continent, containing nearly half of the nation’s farms. Its health is declining due to irrigation overuse, drought, salinity increases, and habitat loss.

The painting I made is an abstract map of a River Red Gum eucalyptus tree flowing into the wetlands, and vice versa, showing their unique connection to each other. River Red Gums are important for their crucial role as habitats, and a food source for a vast number of species, and they are also vital for their ecological function in maintaining healthy river and floodplain ecosystems. They also have significant cultural and economic value, historically used by Indigenous peoples and others for tools, materials, and fuel. They can live up to 1,000 years, but are currently in danger due to irrigation overuse from farms.
