‘Mosaic of Mutual Dreams’

Inspired by the symbiotic nature of ‘map lichen’. For this piece I was also thinking about our current moment in history. Symbiosis doesn’t just concern lichen, or nature, or climate change. But also how we rely upon each other in community to love the earth better. To love and protect each other better. 

When naming this piece I also asked myself, “do lichens dream?”. I learned that when lichens face harsh conditions, they go into a dormant, suspended state for months or years, which is sometimes interpreted as a form of “intentional pause” or resting state.

Even if they don’t have the neurological ability to dream, I think the ideas behind the question are worth considering. Slowing down, being more intentional in our relationships with each other and nature, and holding space and time for important moments. Taking time to breathe and regroup when we’ve been through something challenging. Remembering we are not alone.
