Limited edition fine art print of my ‘Alaskan Kelp Forest’ painting from my collection, "Maps of the Earth We Still Have"

Kelp forests act as underwater “forests”, absorbing carbon, supporting marine life (including commercially important fish), and buffering shorelines. Rising water temperatures, oil and chemical spills, and disruptions to predator-prey chains (such as the collapse of the sea otter food chain) are degrading them rapidly. 

For this painting, I was deeply inspired by the up-close texture of Alaskan Bull Kelp, which looks almost topographical. Another seemingly small detail in this painting are the tiny purple balls. These were inspired by sea urchins and the impact of climate change on their relationship to the kelp forests. Too many sea urchins can destroy kelp forests by overgrazing them (gobbling them up), which can turn the forests into something called "urchin barrens." It's about as chilling to see as you might think (look it up!).
