‘A Fragile Survival’ 

Original 8x10 painting, matted to 11x14 and ready to frame. Made with watercolors, gold leaf, ink and acrylic. 

This painting was inspired by the pattern of map lichen and its symbiotic nature, and thriving together under challenging circumstances. Specifically here I was thinking of how both long-living lichen can be, yet how fragile it is when exposed to fire. Lichens are incredibly sensitive to fire, with severe wildfires capable of eliminating them for decades, often requiring 20–100 years for recovery.
