‘A Democracy of Light No.8’
Original 7x14 Painting
On Canvas
This piece reflects on democracy not as a political system alone, but as a natural principle of shared access, interdependence, and collective survival. Inspired by map lichen, symbiotic organism formed through cooperation, the piece considers what it means that the sun nourishes without hierarchy. Light falls across the landscape indiscriminately: stone, moss, and living surface all receive it equally.
In this work, sunlight and starlight become a metaphor for the resources that sustain life: care, visibility, nourishment, hope, belonging. Lichen survives not through dominance, but through reciprocity, a network of organisms exchanging what each alone could not produce. Their existence challenges the myth of self-sufficiency and instead proposes survival as a collaborative act.
The “democracy” in the title points toward this ecological model of shared existence. Even in harsh conditions, the possibility of thriving emerges through distribution rather than accumulation. The painting asks what human systems might learn from these quiet structures in nature, systems where endurance depends on mutual support, where nourishment circulates, and where even the smallest or most overlooked forms of life remain worthy of light.
